Suzuki pitched what he calls a touch panel shooter to Apple, but hesitated to call it the spiritual successor to Space Harrier. Suzuki said he always had this idea for fantasy shooters, but in the 1980s, limited available technology led to Space Harrier. In 2022, new technologies and approaches turned his idea into Air Twister. “This is my ideal fantasy shooter. I think it feels quite different when played,” Suzuki said. Outside of Space Harrier’s roots, the game seems to be inspired by Rez and Panzer Dragoon, using weapons that lock multiple enemies by swiping multiple enemies on the touch screen. Suzuki has confirmed that the game can also be played on the controller.
In the video of the game, Princess Arch soars across a sea dotted with giant mushrooms, dodging giant floating fish and pulling giant balloons carrying a house behind them. According to Suzuki, Princess Arch’s hair, clothes, and face can all be changed by unlocking various locks, but since this is an Apple Arcade game, these customization upgrades are not microtransactions.
The game’s soundtrack is amazing, featuring 19 original full-length tracks by Dutch composer Valensia. Suzuki said he was a longtime fan of Valencia and was able to contact him on Facebook and make suggestions for making music for the game, and agreed.
Air Twister will be released for Apple Arcade on June 24th. Apple Arcade is available for $ 4.99 per month, giving subscribers access to a large library of carefully selected iPhone and iPad games.
