Governor Kathy Hokul today announced that the State University of New York is accepting applications for the Carrie Gaybay Memorial Scholarship in 2022. The scholarship honors Carrie Gaybay, a lawyer and civil servant who was tragically killed in 2015 as an innocent victim of gun violence. As his personal story of overcoming academic success and financial disadvantages.

Gabay lived in Bronx public housing and grew up in a public school. After a successful high school career, he graduated from Harvard University and Harvard Law School. He had a long-standing commitment to public services and giving back to those around him, and while at Harvard, he ran to become the principal of his undergraduate body. During his career, he worked hard in public services, starting as an assistant counsel for the former governor in 2011 and later as the first deputy counsel for Empire State Development Corporation.
The Carrie Gaybay Memorial Scholarship will once again give five students a full scholarship to attend the four-year State University of New York, which begins in the 2022-23 year. These scholarships cover all costs of attendance, including tuition, room and food, college tuition, books and supplies, transportation and personal expenses. Scholarship recipients also participate in mentoring programs. Applications are available here and will be closed by June 30, 2022.
